As a celebration of World Diabetes Day (WDD) 2018 which commemorated on November 14th and as a standing committee who is committed to take part in improving medical student’s knowledge and skills in the medical field and also to improve community’s awareness and knowledge about public health, SCOPH CIMSA FK Unpad held a project named REMEDY (Raising Awareness and Empowering Women to Eradicate Diabetes). The purpose of this project is to raise people’s knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus including the etiology, signs and symptoms, and how to prevent it from happening by changing our lifestyle and diet.
This community development project started by first intervention at September 18th 2018 at Balai Kesehatan, Desa Cipacing. This first intervention aimed to make a strong bond between the caders and SCOPH CIMSA FK Unpad members through introduction session. Then, it continued with forum group discussion about diabetes mellitus such as definition, risk factor, and prevention as the most important things. During forum group discussion, the caders were so enthusiast to answer the questions that had given and in a great interest to discuss more about diabetes. And the forum group discussion was go on so fun, because we also ‘Ngerujak’ during the session. This intervention closed with informing the caders about REMEDY’s timeline and make sure the caders willingness for the next intervention.
Then, also at September 18th 2018, SCOPH CIMSA FK Unpad officially open the recruitment for REMEDY’s volunteers from medical students of Padjadjaran University batch 2018. There were so many people apply the application form to become the volunteers. Then, at September 24th 2018, we proudly announced the 20 persons REMEDY’s volunteers.
At September 26th 2018, was held second intervention of project REMEDY. This intervention aimed to upgrade the volunteers about diabetes mellitus explained by Anisa Ulfa, FnMC SCOPH CIMSA 2018-2019. Then this intervention continued with trained the volunteers about how to perform the screening test by SCOPH CIMSA FK Unpad members include anthropometry, blood pressure measurement, and GCU test. Through this intervention, it was hope that the volunteers could got upgraded about diabetes and screening skills.
This project was such a great opportunity for SCOPH members and the 20 volunteers to raise our knowledge about diabetes, improve our soft skill when we educate others and share our knowledge to others so they can understand and continue to share it to other people as well, and raise our hard skill when doing the medical check up. With this project, we hope that people awareness about diabetes will increase and they will start changing they lifestyle and diet in order to prevent diabetes. We also hope that REMEDY 2018 will continuously improve the capability of CIMSA’s members, especially for SCOPH, as medical students.
